The Role of Pelvic Floor Muscles
The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles located at the base of the pelvis, forming a supportive hammock-like structure. They play a crucial role in supporting the pelvic organs, including the bladder, uterus, and rectum. Additionally, these muscles are essential for urinary and fecal continence, sexual function, and stability of the pelvis and spine.
When the pelvic floor muscles are functioning optimally, they provide support to the pelvic organs and maintain continence by contracting and relaxing as needed. However, various factors such as pregnancy, childbirth, aging, chronic constipation, obesity, and certain medical conditions can weaken or disrupt the function of these muscles.
Dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles can lead to a range of symptoms, including urinary or fecal incontinence, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, and pelvic organ prolapse. Additionally, imbalances or tension in the pelvic floor muscles can contribute to low back pain, hip pain, and postural issues. By restoring proper function and coordination of the pelvic floor muscles, individuals can experience improvements in continence, pelvic pain, sexual function, and overall quality of life.

What to Expect
During your initial evaluation for Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy, you can expect a comprehensive assessment tailored to your individual needs. Here’s what typically happens during a 60-minute session:
- Medical History Review: Your therapist will go over your medical history, including any pelvic floor issues, surgeries, pregnancies, and relevant medical conditions.
- Discussion of Symptoms: You’ll have a conversation about your specific symptoms, such as urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, constipation, or sexual dysfunction.
- Physical Examination: Your therapist will perform a physical examination, which may include assessing your pelvic floor muscle function. This examination helps identify muscle tone, strength, flexibility, and any areas of tension or weakness.
- Education: Your therapist will educate you about the anatomy and function of the pelvic floor muscles, as well as factors contributing to your symptoms. You’ll learn strategies for improving pelvic floor health and managing your symptoms.
- Goal Setting: Together with your therapist, you’ll establish realistic goals based on your symptoms, lifestyle, and expectations for therapy.
- Treatment Plan: Based on your assessment and goals, your therapist will develop a personalized treatment plan, which may include exercises, manual therapy techniques, biofeedback, lifestyle modifications, and behavioral strategies.
- Instruction in Pelvic Floor Exercises: You’ll learn how to perform pelvic floor exercises correctly, including Kegels and other strengthening or relaxation techniques.
- Home Program: Your therapist may prescribe exercises or activities for you to perform at home between sessions to reinforce progress and accelerate healing.
- Follow-Up Plan: You’ll discuss the frequency and duration of future sessions, as well as expectations for progress and follow-up evaluations.
Throughout the evaluation and subsequent sessions, your therapist will maintain a supportive and respectful environment, ensuring your comfort and confidentiality. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or share any concerns you may have—it’s essential for effective treatment and your overall well-being.
